OK, after all the research and planning, here is the route I came up with for my trip around the country:
Official starting point: San Francisco (Golden Gate Bridge). Official destination: New York City (Brooklyn Bridge).
Like in Woody's song, I am literally driving "from California to the New York Island, from the redwood forests to the gulfstream waters." I am also driving all the way from Lake Michigan to Lake Ponchartrain, but Woody left that direction out. Except for the Southwest and the Northeast (where I grew up), I'm pretty much hitting the whole country. I didn't make an official count, but I estimate it at around 7000 miles and 26 states in 33 days.
Some of the highlights (but by no means an exhaustive list):
Week 1: Redwood National Park, Crater Lake, Idaho Potato Expo, Site of Evel Knievel's jump over the Snake River Canyon
Week 2: Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Mt. Rushmore, Minneapolis, and, of course, the World's Biggest Ball of String
Week 3: Chicago, Louisville Slugger Museum, Nashville, Memphis, The Mississippi Delta Blues Museum
Week 4: New Orleans, Atlanta, Blue Ridge Parkway, Monticello, Antietam Battlefield
Week 5: Washington DC, Philadelphia, Site of Washington Crossing the Delaware, and, of course, the World's Biggest Ball of Rubber Bands
The journey begins Saturday...
